What The Bible Says About Parents’ Role in Education
Teachers are not the only educators in your child’s life. They learn from anyone around them, other students, siblings, pastors, and especially their parents.

Parents have a vital role in educating their children that no one else can reach. Scripture is an excellent guide for us, both at informing us of our role and how best we can teach our children the word of God.
Deuteronomy 6:7
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
In Deuteronomy, we see that parents are to diligently teach their children at every opportunity.
Life is rich with lessons and many of them can be hard to see or understand for children. As the parent, it’s your job to recognize not just what’s happening around you, but what that means to your children – it may be different than your experience.
Not every learning opportunity will be social or out in the “real world”. Often, you’ll be tasked with educating your children in both schoolwork and in scripture.
Teaching children about the Lord is the parents’ main obligation. Teachers, other family members, pastors, and others assist parents in this endeavor.
Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

It has to start at home.
Ecclesiastes 7:12
For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense,
But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.
While money is an excellent defense against many things, there is nothing stronger than the power of wisdom.
As parents, education and teaching the word of God is one of the most important things you can do.
Even though it is very important to do, critical even, it’s equally important that we do it in the right way.

Proverbs 9:9
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
In Proverbs 9:9, we see that when we increase our own knowledge about God, we’re able to share that knowledge with others. They may be improved by it, too. And we’ll be improved by them in return.
But, how we do it matters. We don’t learn to improve ourselves just for that. We do it for spreading God’s love – not for independent gains.
Teaching your children schoolwork, life lessons, and scripture is no easy task. But we can find strength and guidance in the Bible and use God’s love and support to share it with others and encourage them to do the same.
